 How Oculus Rift Works

Imagine the possibilities that plunge players in a realistic war zones or rich Tolkien-inspired worlds. But VR’s true impact would only be clear later, when artists, filmmakers and researchers begin to use it in ways no one has imagined of yet. Palmer Luckey, the founder of Oculus, and Nirav , an engineer at Oculus , gave Popular Science a crash course on the principles behind the platform.

1. Lenses Of Oculus Rift:

Lenses plays a very important role in oculus rift. It helps in establishing a focal point that is critical to perceiving depth. “You’re looking actually at a virtual image plane in each eye,” says Patel. In essence, the users eyes  stare beyond the display and into the virtual environment.

2. Display Of Oculus Rift:

A high-resolution screen is used that sits just a few inches from a users eyes projects a stereoscopic image—or two warped images on each half of screen. “We’re just using the normal way that humans use in binocular vision to perceive depth,” Patel says. “There are also horizontal offsets between objects visible in the left and right eyes, which our visual cortex can process to perceive depths.” It means, when the warped 2-D images are viewed in the close proximity, users are tricked to believe that they’re actually standing in a virtual world.

3.Tracking Technology Of Oculus Rift:

The Oculus headset comes fully equipped with more than a dozen sensors. A gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass track the exact location of a user’s head. Designers have also added external infrared sensors and a camera to increase positional accuracy as well. Software running on a nearby host PC analyzes the data and renders images of a virtual world that adapts to head position. Oculus founder Luckey says that the system’s low latency enhances realism.

4. 3D Audio of Oculus Rift:

To be fully immersive, you require a great sound, and Oculus has the some of the most spatially accurate. “All you need to simulate two microphones in the game, and you can simulate audio in the real world,” Luckey says. But, the fact is that software is slightly more sophisticated. “We can generate a good approximation of what each ear hears at its location in the virtual space,” says Patel, “which is lot better than what you do with a typical surround-sound setup.”
